PoP #44 Midway Post - Blessings

The majority of people in the west have a good life full of blessings which, to be honest, are often taken for granted. For example the blessing of running clean water, enough food without the need to scavenge for it, warm clothes in the winter, cool clothes in the summer, a safe home with a roof to live in, money to spare. At this time of year, as Charles Dickens pointed out in 'A Christmas Carol', the contrast between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' is especially noticeable. Shoppers loaded with shopping bags rushing past the homeless person sleeping on cardboard in a doorway. Now I am not suggesting that we all lose the festive spirit and feel gloomy by any means, I'd be the last person to do that as I love Christmas. What I would like to see is the Christmas spirit that comes from God's supreme gift to us in the form of his son Jesus, spread more widely abroad. While I do get a little cross about the number of charities that send out unsolicited mail at this time of the year - it was worse last year when we were still in parish ministry -I can appreciate why they do it. Generally there is an increased awareness of those less fortunate which some choose to ignore, but others will reach out whether financially or by volunteering at one of the Crisis Christmas centres. For those of you not in the UK Crisis provides support for homeless people and at Christmas they offer Christmas Lunch as well as the chance to access their other facilities. It is apt that the theme for this months PoP Challenge is Blessings. My prayer for you is that this Christmas will be a joyful time, surrounded by those you love, comforted if it the first Christmas without a loved one, supported if you are going through trying times but most of all blessed by the giver and source of all blessings, God, as you celebrate the day remembering that Christmas only exists because of Christ.

(Yes I know that Jesus is male but I made a female card in anticipation, well with both girls married now you just never know and we need some more girls to balance it out!)
