Curious on the Path of Positivity

I love moon watching and although I do not know the names or positions of the constellations other than the obvious ones, gazing at the night sky and marvelling at it's beauty has been a life-long habit. When I came across this quote from Stephen Hawking I knew I had to use it for the theme 'Curiosity'. 

While I acknowledge that  Stephen Hawking was a brilliant scientist there is one aspect of what he says here that, in my opinion, he misses. Not everyone will agree with what I am about to say and that is fine, I respect other people's views even if I might not agree just as I hope they would for mine. But as a Christian I do not look at the heavens and wonder about what makes the universe exist, I know who makes the universe exist. The first verse of Psalm 19 sums it it up beautifully: 

  The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Noel and Tricia Richards wrote a worship song some years back that was based on the opening verse of Psalm 19 and it has remained a firm favourite in many churches. If you are interested there is quite a good version here: 

Meanwhile I will carry on looking up at the heavens and continue to be curious about the wonders of creation in all it's splendour.

So here is my project for the mid way post for this month's challenge at Path of Positivity.

This project was an experiment, I was exercising my own curiosity here! I wanted to work out if there was a way of transferring digital images to fabric for cross stitching or embroidery. My original plan was to print it out on square paper and make a cross stitch chat but when it came to actually stitching it interpreting the chart for the text was too complicated for my limited abilities. So my back up plan was to transfer the design to fabric and embroider it. 

Before I go any further I know all the embroiderers out there will be throwing their hands up in horror but I am not a sewer, it is the least favourite crafty thing to do for me. Cross stitching I can just about manage but embroidery is a completely different matter.

Back to the story! Now I knew that you can use carbon copy paper to transfer designs to fabric the only problem was that in the last house move cull I had given all my carbon paper away and there was not time to order any if I was going to get it done by the deadline. So I thought if I print it out on tissue paper, tack it to the material and stitch over the top that would work. Well it did to a certain extent, the problem only came when trying to remove the tissue paper. I was left with little bits around all the letters. I soaked it in cold water for a while which got rid of some more then gently brushed it with a small cleaning brush. Most of the tissue has come off but if I look very closely I can still see odd  bits poking out from under some of the lettering.

So the verdict is that copy paper is probably better than tissue paper although it may take longer to transfer the pattern and if you use tissue paper it is not so good for lettering or small motifs and  try to find one without a coating in that will break up a dissolve better in water.

When I had finished my sewing and getting as much tissue paper off as I could I mounted it in an embroidery hoop and backed it with black felt. A ribbon attached to the top of the hoop makes a convenient hanger.

Will I try this again? Probably but with carbon paper and not for a while! Am I pleased with the end result? Well despite not going quite to plan on the whole I am. There are things I can try differently to improve it so it has been a good experiment.

A Bit More Relaxing

After the tale of woe for the beginning of this challenge I feel I am on safer ground this time. What could be more relaxing than a day on the beach listening to the waves gentle rhythm, searching the rock pools for interesting creatures and collecting shells to take home as a memento. Sounds idyllic and if you can find a secluded beach that takes a bit of effort to get onto then totally possible!

The background is made up using different papers from the A Taste of Summer set and the letters are also cut from one of the papers. I have torn the wave paper to try to show some separation in them.

The beach ball and bucket images are coloured and fussy cut then arranged on the background. I used foam pads to attach them to add some dimension to the card.

The challenge runs until the 1st September and our optional twist is a focus on relaxation. If you would like to challenge yourself, create a project designed to send someone a message to help them relax and rejuvenate or a project that depicts relaxation in some manner.

And Relax!

The DT at Path of Positivity have had their summer break and are back with a new challenge with the optional theme of Relaxation. Summer is of course the time most people kick back for a while and recharge the batteries. Here in England and elsewhere in Europe we have been experiencing some mini heatwaves so it has been impossible not to relax, it's too hot to do anything else!
We have just got back from a few days with our eldest daughter and her husband in Copenhagen. It's a lovely city and well worth a visit there is just so much to do and see. Being very flat meant that I was able to get about and do a fair bit of walking.

Ok I admit not all the holiday was relaxing, the day our passports and money were stolen was not so good but no one was hurt and the British Embassy were brilliant producing emergency ones so we could get home. Once the shock was over we thoroughly enjoyed our extra three day stay and I would still say that Copenhagen is the safest place I've been too.

Moral of the story, make sure everything is done up properly so you don't offer easy temptation to opportunist thieves!

This month we get to work with a lovely digi set from Decosse's Dynamite Doodles called A Taste of Summer available from Scribbles Designs (the link is below). I have teamed it up with a couple of holiday photos featuring the iconic Little Mermaid statue and an interloper!

Just as a change this whole project is done digitally. I could have printed off the elements and cut and pasted with glue but decided to try and see what I could do with my limited knowledge of digital designing.

The background paper has been lightened using a graphics programme. The original is quite a bit darker so it was overpowering the photos.

The challenge starts on 5th August and runs until the 1st September and our optional twist is a focus on relaxation. If you would like to challenge yourself, create a project designed to send someone a message to help them relax and rejuvenate or a project that depicts relaxation in some manner.

Winning Birthday

After a weekend of Wimbledon finals, the Cricket World Cup final and a Grand Prix it seemed appropriate to actually get around to blogging this little chap!

I use the Tasste of Summer set for the green matt and the balls in the background. The green matt is from the glitter papers and the ball is from the elements. or the balls I cropped and copied the image a few times and arranged them randomly on the paper then recoloured some before printing out. The pink and yellow balls overlapping the image have been cut from the scrap left and glued on.

The printed background paper is cut with a stitched edged die and the stitch effect highlighted with a black pen. The coloured image and matt are cut with rectangle dies.

Positive Friendship

Another month and another new challenge at Path of Positivity. This time our optional theme is Friendship. In a world of social media, instant contact and mass communication how is it that people generally are more isolated and lonely than ever. Some, no doubt will attribute it to the changing nature of society, families live further apart from each other and gone are the times when people stayed in or near their childhood homes. With the removal of the old 'back to back' housing the sense of community has dwindled, we are not so likely to know when or if neighbours are in need and hold back from finding out for fear of invading privacy. Some of these changes are for the better but the effects are not, the housing is better but the community is gone.

More recently I think the upward trend in loneliness has been helped along by social media. At the click of a mouse you can gather hundreds of friends and, lets be honest, most of them you are never likely to enter into a meaningful relationship with yet alone meet them. Now there is no harm in that but if you are lonely it can make you feel more isolated. I like having 'friends' who visit my blog or are 'friends' on Facebook but I do not have to rely on them solely for friendship I also have a lovely group of people whom I know and who know me. At the end of the day it is the friends that we meet up with, phone, skype that mean so much more than a long list of friends on the internet. So this month join with us at Path of Positivity and let us celebrate friendship. Let's tell our friends how much they mean to us.

I printed out the image twice and cut out the wand and princess from the second image, using it to 3D decoupage ontop of the first image.

The crown has been coloured in with the Gelli Roll and Posca pens and small gems added to the tips of the point. The pink star is one I have had in my stash for more years than I care to remember! I think it came in a bulk buy when my girls were small for gluing and sticking sessions on wet holidays, the eldest is now 31 so we are talking decades ago! It just goes to show that even bright pink stars have their use eventually.

The backing paper is printed out on paper that has a very fine glimmer to it although the photograph has not picked it up very well.

There's A Chill In The Air

It's the half way point of our first Path of Positivity challenge for 2018 with the optional theme 'Shades of Blue'. Feeling Blue

This year at Path of Positivity we are trying something new with our challenges optional themes. Each month the optional theme will focus on a particular colour. This month it is Shades of Blue.

So often after Christmas comes the low time. All the excitement and build up for weeks beforehand and now it is all over. The tinsel is looking tired, the lights have lost lustre and the baubles are battered. Family and friends that gathered from far flung parts have all returned and the daily grind resumed. On top of that, at least in this part of the world, the weather is not helping. So far this year it has done nothing but rain! It certainly is a time for feeling the blues.

However if Christmas means anything it is the promise that God loves us, provides for us all year round every day of our lives. That baby at the heart of every Nativity set, which we are all too eager to pack away for another year, grew into a man that set the world alight 2000 years ago and continues to do so today. So this year instead of leaving Jesus as a baby wrapped up, packed up and only getting a look in once a year, let's take him with us in our hearts and make him part of our lives every day, not just at Christmas. Then maybe we will  not end up with the January blues again next year.

My card was inspired in some degree by having a lot of family gatherings this Christmas and then having to say goodbye to them, some for a short time others for longer.

The elephant and sentiment are printed as one image and the elephant printed a second time. I used greys to colour the image then went over the top with a blue pen to give it a blue tinge.

I have used three of the papers from the Naturally Cool Set, a dark blue to cover the front of the card, a lighter blue to create a small border of the dark blue and a spotty one as a mat for the topper.

I do hope you will come a join in the fun, you have a whole month to come up with something. New Kid On The Block

Faith, Hope and Love

This month the optional theme at Path of Positivity is Faith, Hope and Love. As it is June and the start of the most popular time for weddings we are looking especially for wedding/engagement/anniversary makes reflecting the Faith, Hope and Love theme.

I love finding songs that have thought provoking or inspiring lyrics. I have used quite a few 'unusual' ones in my All Age Worship Services over the years. Jim Croce's 'Time in a bottle' has always been a favourite, the melody is lovely and the words are wonderful. In fact they work so well with the theme for the challenge that I decided to  make them the focal of my make.

Just in case you cannot make out the words from my photo here they are, including the part that did not fit on the front.

Serif Craft Artist 2 programme or similar graphics software. (Link to free compact version)

This is a different project for me because I have made the whole thing digitally, not a piece of paper or pen in sight. The papers are layered up, the text and digi stamp added and the shadows put in using Craft Artist software.

If I wanted to make a physical card I have two choices. I could print out all the different element and then assemble them or I could print out the whole project as a card leaving the shadows to give some depth to it. It would also work really well as a scrapbook page, again either printing out the different elements and assembling them or printing off as one page.

While it was fun playing around with the software if I am being totally honest nothing quite beats the more hands on approach with paper, pens and glue!

The optional theme at Path of Positivity is Faith, Hope and Love. As this is the start of the wedding season we would particularly like to see Wedding, Engagement and Anniversary makes.

In order to have a chance to win the prize for the Most Inspirational Creation, we want to see you create a wedding card, an engagement card or even a wedding anniversary card that reflects the concepts of faith, hope and/or love.  It is time to put on those rose coloured glasses and get a little mushy.

If you do follow the optional theme, be sure to add FT after your name so that we include you in the draw for the prize for Most Inspirational. We also ask that you please leave a comment letting us know how your wedding or engagement card relates to the concept of faith, hope and/or love if it isn’t readily clear within the design itself or clearly written somewhere else in your post. While you may easily see how your creation ties into the theme, it may not be as apparent to me or the DT members. That is why we ask that you clarify it somewhere, whether here or in your blogpost. You can simply write a sentence at the bottom of your post next to the link up for this challenge, if it would be easier. We just need to know how your project ties into the theme. Letting us know, clears up any ambiguity that may exist.

Remember, in order to be considered eligible for this month’s prizes, ALL creations must be positive, inspirational, motivational or encouraging in some nature. Keeping Time

Scrapper's Delights have a progressive challenge running on their Facebook and this month have a great steampunk/vintage image to work with.



Materials used:Scrapper's Delights - Lady Constance
DDDoodles - A Matter of Time Patterned Papers
DDDoodles - As Time Goes By
X-Press It card
printer card and paper
vintage photo distress ink and applicator
A5 white card blank
Copic pens

Lady Constance is printed out on X-Press It card and coloured with Copics. The coloured image is than fussy cut.

Three of the papers are printed out on paper. The clock face paper is used to cover the front of the card blank leaving a white border. Two of the Matter of Time papers are cut to make a layered matt for the image. All the papers have been edged with vintage photo distress ink.

The time quote is printed on printer paper, trimmed to size and coloured with the vintage photo ink.

The coloured image is attached to the card using gel glue to give some dimension to the card.
